Butler Manufacturing Services Ltd. (BMS): The Wastewater Management Veterans

The whole construction/waste management industry is moving towards pre-fabrication, reuse and also the improvement of their environmental protection policies. Furthermore, with huge housing demand in expanding economies, houses are frequently being built on sites where the municipal sewage treatment plant is already overloaded.

Enter Butler Manufacturing Services Ltd. (BMS).

BMS was founded by Mr. Seamus Butler, who is currently fulfilling the role of the Managing Director, on foot of an Irish Government R&D grant to research how improvements could be made on Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC/Biodisc) sewage treatment. The revolutionary Aerotor followed, which then was further improved into the Blivet Package Sewage Treatment System in the late 1980s. This has been exported to 50+ countries worldwide. “BMS have always regarded itself as an R&D company making constant improvements and innovating in response to market demands. This led BMS to innovate a complete suite of products for surface water management, a ‘one stop shop’ including attenuation, interceptors, holding tanks (incl. chemical resistant), hydrobrakes, rainwater harvesting tanks/ filters & vortex silt/oil/debris separators and fully fitted pumping stations,” says Mr. Butler.

Today, through its Blivet Package Sewage Treatment System, BMS offers a completely prefabricated ‘plug & play’ portable system that protects the environment by treating sewage in a simple and effective way. “It is an ideal temporary sewage treatment solution that can allow new housing to go ahead when the municipal sewage treatment plant is overloaded or for more remote sites like construction/oil/gas/military camps,” says Mr. Butler. Further, a UV disinfection system can be added to the Blivet to convert the sewage to non-potable water suitable for reuse on a site e.g., toilet flushing, wheeling/road washing, process water, or even irrigation.

It offers a compelling financial/environmental payback compared to tankering away untreated sewage. In an instance, BMS was appointed by Roadbridge & Sisk to provide sewage treatment for all their construction workers and the site offices during the construction phase of the Center Parcs Longford Forest Project. The company worked with Roadbridge/Sisk to produce an innovative version of its Blivet Package Sewage Treatment Plant integrating UV disinfection at the outlet. This made the treated effluent suitable for non-potable reuse on-site. The Blivet UV was chosen as it offered a big advantage over the costly option of having a tanker to take untreated sewage away from the site once/twice weekly for disposal at a large central works and was more environmentally sustainable.

BMS also offers the BMS Recyclone in its suite of solutions which operates as a completely pre-fabricated closed-loop vehicle wash water recycling system suitable for cars, vans, trucks, buses, and trains. It can be set up so that it has no foul discharge. Mains water demand/pollution can be reduced to zero when integrated with rainwater harvesting. Furthermore, the zero-discharge setup can negate the need for a license. BMS’s solution portfolio also encompasses the Stormbreaker Defender, which uses vortex dynamics to remove silt/oil/debris with no power requirement. It was developed with the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway and Enterprise Ireland and had full backup data and all sizes can be shipped in a standard 40-foot container.

What differentiates BMS is its focus on producing innovative package solutions for the sewage, wastewater, surface water, and vehicle washwater treatment markets. Further, BMS’ products are subject to continual development as part of the ISO 9001 Quality system, first accredited in 1995, a long time before Tesla became famous for constant improvement. “We are really proud of our extensive experience and the ability to develop a customised solution or find a solution when problems occur down the line,” concludes Mr. Butler.
